Whoa. Read this and then come back and tell me how on earth we’re going to keep ahead of malicious activity on the Internet if something so simple as an RSS feed could be hijacked and manipulated. To be honest, I would normally doubt such a thing could even make sense — but then again, we’re talking about Microsoft here. No matter how secure they make their software (yeah, I know, I know — I’ll cut them some slack here), they still remain the #1 target for hackers. So if there’s any way possible a built-in RSS reader in IE7 could get hijacked, somebody’s gonna do it. Yipes. What’s next? My bookmarks getting scrambled and all pointing to porn sites?

Here’s my humble opinion: use simple, low market-share, and open source software whenever possible. Security through obscurity and/or diversification isn’t a joke, it works and it’s great. Biology fights pathogens through diversity, and technology should be no different. I know that when I use Safari on a Mac, I’m just not a target. 2%? 3%? Big deal. And that’s why, from a certain strange point of view, it’s good Macs DON’T have a large market-share….
